Chief Delphi Invitational
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of
Science and Technology) is a foundation
established to encourage students to choose a
career in engineering by sparking their interest
in science, math, and technology through a
national robotics competition. High school
students team up with corporate engineers to
design and construct a robot during an intense
six-week period. The robot then competes in a
series of regional competitions leading up to
the National Championship.
The Megatron Oracles was founded in 1999 after
winning a grant from Delphi Automotive to
sponsor a local team. The following year, Delphi
Automotive moved its FIRST support to another
local high school hoping that the Megatron
Oracles would find sponsorship on its own.
Beginning in 2000 the team has been sponsored by
General Motors (GM); from 2000-2003 the GM Truck
Assembly Plant was the team sponsor. In 2004 the
team decided to switch to GM Flint Tool and Die
and also acquired a machine shop to support them
and a professional relationship was started with
SpenTech Machine Engineering Corporation. Also
in 2004 the team received sponsor support from
Delphi Automotive in the form of mentoring and
machining after a four year absence. In
2005 the team proceeded with help of
SpenTech along with GM Flint Tool and Die,
Team 314 had a rebuilding year with new
leadership. For the 2006 season the
team was successful not only building a
competing robot but following FIRST vision
by winning the U L Safety and the Website
award in Chicago. Starting in 2007,
Team 314 purchased our first milling machine
and winning the Woodie Flowers award for Dr.
William "Doc" Welch, our founding father.
2008 continued the tradition of purchasing
by getting our first welder and by fall
moving into our new permanent home at our
high school. Our proudest
accomplishment was at the Detroit Regional
when we were only doing what FIRST's vision
is by helping others and our reward was the
Johnson & Johnson Gracious Professionalism
Award. 2008 was great.
Membership is open to any Carman Ainsworth High
School student who wants to participate
throughout the season. However, benefits of
membership (e.g. -- travel and uniforms) will
only be given to those students who have
demonstrated a commitment to the team through
regular attendance and participation in
activities.
Attendance at activities throughout the year is
important. However, from January 2 through
mid-April is the official FIRST season and
therefore the most time-intensive. Students
should anticipate meeting at least three times
per week during this time period.
Participation includes, but is not limited to:
build crew, drivers practice, animation crew,
web design crew, fundraising, spirit crew,
communication crew, and LEGO League Mentoring.
